The Great Fall Migration Begins
Fall migration is underway around the Big Lake. Late August kicks off the Common Nighthawk migration, when thousands can fill the sky on warm evenings, followed by a flood of songbirds heading south in early September and peak raptor migration in September and October. Because most raptors are reluctant to cross large bodies of water, they veer southwest along the shoreline when they hit Lake Superior, concentrating at spots like Duluth's Hawk Ridge and Michigan's Whitefish Point — a natural migration corridor that has recorded over 340 bird species. Grab your binoculars and head for the shore; the show only gets better from here.
Flocking to the Birds by Scot Stewart explores some of the best places around Lake Superior to witness migration in action. Originally published in 2002, the story features a migration hotspot map, four premier birding sites around the Big Lake, and a month-by-month guide to what’s flying by.
