The newest section of Duluth’s Lakewalk won’t officially open until noon Friday, when Mayor Don Ness cuts the ribbon on a bridge spanning the Lester River.
But local walkers and bicyclists have wasted no time in testing out the new bridge and a recently completed tunnel to Brighton Beach.

Run, Jamie, Run
Jamie McDonald, a 27-year-old British adventurer who is running across Canada to raise money for children’s hospitals, reached Sault Ste. Marie last month and is now approaching Thunder Bay. He’s been on the road since March.
Jamie is expecting to arrive in Thunder Bay, Ontario in September of 2013. The Thunder Bay Public Library (Mary J.L. Black Library at 901 Edward St S) will be hosting an evening of inspirational stories and discussion on September 12th from 7:00pm-9:00pm with his presence. He will also make an appearance at the Terry Fox Information Centre, the day of his arrival.
+ The Duluth port will receive $10 million in federal aid for improvements and expansion, reports the Duluth News Tribune.
+ A 3,810-acre tract of shoreline and forest near Crisp Point has been added to Michigan’s Lake Superior State Forest, the Mining Journal reports. The purchase was financed by a $4.5 million federal grant and a $1.5 million private donation.
