The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, capped by a plaque dedication ceremony on Oct. 31.
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario, culminated the 50th anniversary year of the International Bridge with the unveiling of a bronze plaque at a luncheon last week. Identical plaques will be installed at each end of the bridge, which spans the St. Marys River.
The Michigan Department of Transportation posted a video about the event and the bridge’s history.
Opening Today: Exhibit from the Photographer of “John and Schoep”
Hannah Stonehouse Hudson – the photographer behind the viral image of John Unger cradling his ailing dog, Schoep, in the Lake – opens a photo exhibit tonight at Big Water Coffee Roasters in Bayfield, Wisconsin, 5-7 p.m.
“Canines and a Horse Gang” is a collection of Hannah’s best animal photos, taken all over the country. At the reception, meet Hannah and hear the stories behind her photos. She did both photos and story about the Rittenhouse Inn’s Wassail Dinners for last year’s December/January issue of Lake Superior. She’ll be writing a Nice Shots for the upcoming February/March about that photo and another that went viral – a bear on the ice by the Madeline Island ferry.
The exhibit will be on display through December.
+ John and 19-year-old Schoep were recently featured on “The Doctors.” If you’re a dog lover, grab a few tissues before you watch.
Public Comment on Personal Watercraft
Through the end of today, officials at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will take public comments on the use of personal watercraft – better known by brand names like Jet Ski and Sea-Doo. The feedback will help shape an upcoming environmental assessment, which could result in new park policy. PWC use is currently limited to one stretch of the Lakeshore.
Northland Extends a Hand
On the heels of Lake Superior-region electrical workers, volunteer drivers from Como Oil & Propane left from Duluth for the East Coast this week, bringing 40,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel to hurricane-battered communities. After delivering the fuel in New Jersey, the trucks will spend a few weeks making local and regional deliveries.
Folk House Film
The North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota, is the subject of a documentary film due out by the end of the year. Watch the very impressive trailer on Vimeo or YouTube. The school has taught traditional northern crafts like boatbuilding, woodworking and blacksmithing since 1997.
Worth Mooning Over
Paul Sundberg’s photographs never disappoint. Here are his latest Photos of the Week, of Split Rock Lighthouse and a rising full moon.
