A sign of spring
Ice-breaking started on Lake Superior this week. The U.S. Coast Guard told us that the thick ice and continued cold will drag out the operations.
“Everything is going to take longer. That’s pretty much going to be a given.”

Jake Golton already had five sled-dog racing wins in five tries under his belt this season.
The L'Amable, Ontario, racer made it six with his biggest win yet, taking home first place in the fifth annual CopperDog 150.
Report: National park spending boosts region
In a just-released economic-benefit report, the U.S. National Park Service says that the parks in our region generated millions in visitor spending in 2012.
- Apostle Islands National Lakeshore: $24.03 million in visitor spending, supporting 330 jobs.
- Grand Portage National Monument: $5.518 million, 72 jobs
- Isle Royale National Park: $3.477 million, 50 jobs.
- Keweenaw National Historical Park: $10 million, 95 jobs.
- Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: $23.721 million, 312 jobs.
+ In all of 2012, 163,419 people visited Apostle Island National Lakeshore. Thanks to the ice caves, it’s already been visited this year by nearly 100,000.
+ Lake Superior’s water level was just 0.84 inches below long-term average in February. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the Lake could climb above average in March. It’s been below normal since April 1998.
