Grandma's Marathon, a race from Two Harbors to Duluth, is the 16th largest marathon in the U.S. The men's course record fell last weekend. Here, participants run through Knife River, Minnesota, just past the 5-mile mark.
Funds needed to save glacial copper piece
The world's largest single piece of glacial copper, currently on display in Marquette, could soon go elsewhere unless enough money is raised.

Apostle Islands dock temporarily closes
Staff at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore sent us the following update on the Little Sand Bay dock improvements:
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore staff have completed five new finger piers and have been working hard to lower the main dock. The main dock is being lowered in response to long-term trends in lake levels due to climate change. Lowering of the west side of the main dock is nearly complete, but is going slower than expected. To allow maximum access of the dock and finger piers, the work crew has been keeping the area without decking to a minimum. To help speed up the process, the north side of the dock will be closed beginning June 24, 2014, until the project is complete. Even without the north dock, available docking is double what it has been in recent years due to the new finger piers. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in late July/early August.
