The Rules

CATEGORIES

Images may be submitted in four categories – lake/landscapes, humor/people, nature, artsy/altered. A first- and second-place winner will be chosen in each category. A Grand Prize overall winner will also be chosen.

ELIGIBILITY

Photographers: The contest is open to any photographer who has not been paid to have a photo printed in Lake Superior Magazine; magazine staff members and their immediate families cannot enter. We encourage the works of amateurs and ask that those who enter be amateurs who make less than 50 percent of their income through photography.

Images: Photos must have been taken in the Lake Superior region and nearby areas. Previously published images are NOT eligible nor are images that have won or been honored in past photo contests or are being submitted concurrently to any other contest. Up to 10 images may be submitted. The entrant must hold all rights for the image submitted. Any images with recognizable people should have permission for submission from those in the photo, available to Lake Superior Magazine upon request.

Digital images may be sent on a CD as a TIFF or JPEG with at least 400 dpi or higher and include a printout summary no larger than 8x10 inches (can be “thumbnails”). Digital images can also be uploaded via our submission link (below). We no longer can accept prints or color transparencies (35mm slide or larger). Photos may be adjusted for color correcting, cropping or removal of dust spots but should not be manipulated in other ways. Altered images will be disqualified.

PREPARING MATERIALS

Include the entry form that can be downloaded from online or can be mailed to those who send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Lake Superior Magazine. Include entrant’s NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE and E-MAIL ADDRESS.

Photo IDs: Each photo entry must be identified with NAME, ADDRESS, TITLE, PLACE WHERE PHOTO WAS TAKEN and CATEGORY, although digital submissions on a CD only need name and address marked on the CD. We recommend that you do not write directly on the backs of prints because ballpoint pens can “engrave” through the photo, and gel or other inks do not dry properly. We suggest making a label for each separate print or transparency containing the required information, then adhere it to the back of the print or transparency.

PERMISSIONS

By entering the contest, you are automatically conveying to Lake Superior Magazine, its affiliate publications and websites unlimited, nonexclusive publishing rights to each image submitted.

  • Photo Cropping

When you submit photos for consideration, whether for our contests or for use in the magazine, you should submit full images. If we feel the representation within the magazine warrants it, we will then crop according to our needs. Generally, we use images full out whenever possible.
