Required Materials
LSPC publications are desktop produced and 100% digitized. We prefer QuarkXPress, TIFF or EPS files for all camera-ready ad materials. Files submitted in other software formats will be accepted only with prior approval. To preserve your color integrity, we don’t suggest PDF files, although this is becoming the most common form of submission. Native files must include Macintosh screen AND printer font files, EPS files, TIFF files and other graphic files linked to the document, including imbedded graphics. It is recommended that you use a FlightCheck program or QuarkXPress collect method to gather all files. All electronic ads must come with a Paper Proof AND electronic Color Proof of ad (if more than one color) as it will run. Publisher will not be responsible for poorly constructed ads that do not meet industry standards. Materials will be returned to originator for correction if specifications are outside of the bounds of our correction. Costs associated with correcting camera-ready ads will be passed on to the advertiser.
Camera-Ready Specs:
Digitized computer files are required for ALL advertising materials. Graphic files must meet 800 dpi minimum/1200 dpi maximum for line art, 400 dpi minimum/600 dpi maximum for all other art. This is especially important when embedding images within PDFs and EPS files. All color graphics MUST be set to CMYK standards with specific color names. We recommend names using color values: i.e. “100c100m25k” instead of “dark red.”
QuarkXPress Typographic Preferences must be set at these values –
Superscript offset: 33%, VScale: 50%, HScale: 50%.
Subscript offset: 0%, VScale: 50%, HScale: 50%.
Small Caps: VScale: 80%, HScale: 80%.
Superior: VScale: 50%, HScale: 50%.
Auto Kern Above: 10 pt.
Flex Space Width: 50%.
Baseline Grid: Increment 12 pt.
Auto Leading: 20%.
DO NOT lock material to the baseline.
A laser proof of material must accompany all computer files.
Tone Density:
Recommended 17-line screen. Camera-ready ads must meet 800 dpi minimum. Black-and-White and two-color screens – Maximum density 200%; second color not to exceed 100%. Second color consists of process ink or a matched PMS ink. PMS ink quoted at additional cost because this adds a fifth color to the printing. Four-color screens – must not exceed 260% total in any given area; maximum density for any one color not to exceed 65%. Rotation: Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow.
Color Proof:
A four-color proof is requested for all color material. Tear sheets from previous printings or low resolution color laser prints are not recommended.
PDF Files:
Because the magazine is produced as PDF files for printing, it is STRONGLY suggested that you don’t submit ad materials as PDF files OR imbed PDFs within ad materials. Although this is an increasingly popular way of submitting materials, we cannot guarantee the integrity of color or images when converting PDFs for printing. We WILL convert PDF files to our format for printing.
Ad Materials, Artwork, Production and Charges
Deadline for Camera-Ready is one week after Ad Reservation Close. Ads to be prepared by publisher are due by one week before Space Deadline.
Ad production:
Advertiser may purchase production services (typesetting/scanning) on ads that are not camera-ready.
Paper Production Materials:
High quality stat or paper output of at least 1,000 dpi. Lo-res 300 and 600 dpi paper outputs, fax and photocopies are not acceptable for logos or photographs.
Proofs of advertising requiring production are provided to advertisers sending complete material at least 5 working days prior to Space Reservation Deadline. Copy received after that date cannot be guaranteed the right of approval or revision. Proof corrections or changes will be billed if they are the responsibility of the advertiser. Changes required for materials submitted as camera-ready from outside souces will be returned to those sources for correction. Every effort will be made to return original physical materials unless non-return is requested. Publisher is not responsible for materials left unclaimed for more than a year.
Assembly Charge (group page ads):
10% of Space & Color rate with a $30 minimum.
Special requirements, artist consultation and changes made to the ad after production is completed will be charged at a $60 per hour rate with a $10 minimum. Duplicate files and transfers to disk, conversions, revisions, color printer’s proofs, resizing and other special requirements will be billed as Production Charges, if necessary.

Advertising Special Pages - Periodicals
|
|
Lake Superior Magazine and Lake Superior Travel Guide feature a Directory of Special Emphasis Advertising, by category, on a regular basis. We also have Special Advertising Sections and ad groupings for categories of advertisers.
Country Inns & Bed-and-Breakfast Inns, Farm, Garden and Greenhouses, Campgrounds and Golf Courses are each featured four times a year. All have a 7-time option. Artists & Art Galleries, Events & Happenings and Destination Travel pages are featured in all issues. Organizations can create a 30-word listing with color picture or logo that are displayed with others devoted to the category on a full page or more. These Directory listings are relatively inexpensive. Special category pages can also be created for communities or specific groups. Departments can also feature focused stories, perfect for advertising, such as our annual Wedding story (February/March) or Education Emphasis (February/March & August/September).
You can download a form that explains and demonstrates the Directory listings, provides an application form for specific categories and gives you the pricing. Selecte the General Directory form if you'd like to create your own category or select from multiple categories.
Lake Superior Made is an advertising feature in all issues of Lake Superior Magazine and Lake Superior Travel Guide, emphasizing locally made products that deserve wider marketing. Included in the buy is a page on the Lake Superior Made website (debuting in October 2012).
The Lake Superior Marketplace appears in every issue of Lake Superior Magazine and the Lake Superior Travel Guide, positioned in the back pages. Listing-style, Pre-formatted full-color Display Ads and Regular Display Ads can be placed within the Marketplace pages. Marketplace Listings are unformatted, include a classification header and are available on a total-inch basis and can include color line graphics or pictures. Frequency discounts are available for multiple listing insertions contracted for at the same time. Listing frequency is not applicable to display frequency nor vice versa. Listing ads must be paid in advance.

About FTP
FTP stands for “File Transfer Protocol,” and is a standard way to manage large-sized files between local and remote computers through the Internet. If you maintain a Website, need to send a large file to a friend who has FTP access active on his computer or want to download an update or file from an FTP site, you will need FTP software.
Mac
On the Mac side there are several possibilities including Fetch, but we recommend for ease and friendliness of Transmit. You can download a trial version in order to FTP to us. Transmit requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher. You have 15 days to test Transmit with no features disabled. After 15 days, Transmit will limit your sessions to 10 minutes at a time. www.panic.com/transmit/
Windows
On the PC we recommend for Windows WS_FTP Professional, but they also have a WS-FTP Home and Server version. All have trial (15-day) versions. The file download is about 10 mb. This operates almost exactly like the Transmit in terms of easily transferring a file from the left to a window on the right. www.ipswitch.com/
Transferring Your Files
Once you have the software, take your files and place them into a locatable folder on your computer. That folder then needs to be transferred (copied) to our FTP site. Please name the folder clearly and uniquely: client name, issue to be used in (example: "Bluefin Bay, Aug./Sep. 2012" or "Bluefin_AS12").
Uploading to Us
Use of our FTP Site is simple. You just need to connect to the site, fill in the account & password, making sure you enter it “cAsE SenSITivE.” Here is our FTP site Information:
SITE: ftp.lakesuperiormagazine.net
ACCOUNT: lsmftp
PASSWORD: BigLake123!
MODE: Passive
After you have connected, place your file in our folder marked “Place Files Here.” After you have transferred your file, you must notify us by phone or e-mail that you have placed a file on the FTP site and what issue it is for. If you have additional questions, problems or concerns please contact us.

Lake Superior Magazine is a bimonthly regional magazine that focuses on Lake Superior and its watershed, with additional coverage of the surrounding region up to 100 miles from the shoreline. We write about the people who inhabit and visit the region. We write about the history of the region. We extol the virtues of the lake region and its resources. We speak fluent Lake Superior, which means we’ve learned a great deal about two countries, one province and three states and we share what we’ve learned with others. Our premier travel publication is the Lake Superior Travel Guide, published annually in January.
As a regional magazine, we have good reach into both countries with a national distribution, but totally regional focus. Our strongest distribution is in the Midwest, of course. Like all regionals, we have a strong and loyal readership, one that is generally more responsive to what they feel affects their favorite subject - Lake Superior. They know and love Lake Superior.
Although Lake Superior Magazine and Lake Superior Travel Guide appeal to the traveler, our content also has a heavy dose of lifestyle, so as well-rounded publications, an advertiser can’t beat the combination we offer. We are respected in the world of magazines and have won numerous awards from our peers. We’ve been named by the Chicago Tribune as one of the 50 Best Magazines in the country.
In addition to the magazines, we produce books, calendars and maps. Our readers buy our products through our Website and catalogs that we produce. They like to buy unique and quality products and are attuned to online purchases.
Frequency always counts. We recommend against single ad placements. A successful use of magazine advertising means that your message is consistently in front of the audience in multiple issues. Surveys show that our readers respond well to the businesses they see. Your message gets results.
We prefer to talk with our clients personally and will provide specific rate and additional demographic data upon request. Please complete the information form and we will contact you by the next business day. We appreciate your interest and hope we can do business together.
You can contact us by phone - 888-BIG LAKE (888-244-5253)
