It happens every year. The number of entries gets a little bit bigger and the quality of the images just keeps getting better. What a delightful quandary for our judges in this 16th year of the Lake Superior Photo Contest.
This year we had more than 250 entries and more than 1,000 images from which to choose. We’ve packed these pages full of winners and honorable mentions. You’ll find a special honor awarded - the By the Shores winner.
Because there were so many great images, we are also posting additional images that earned honors in the “finalist” category in this online story.
This year’s Grand Prize winner, Rob Wiener of Eagle River, Wisconsin, will receive $200 plus a Lake Superior Wall Calendar and one year’s subscription to Lake Superior Magazine. The judges liked Rob’s strong colors and amazing detail in his photograph of a thunderstorm on the lake.
First Place winners in each category and our By the Shores winner receive a Lake Superior Wall Calendar and a subscription. Those winners are Shawn Thompson of Duluth for Lake/Landscapes; Tom Ala of Springfield, Illinois, for By the Shores; Mark Udstrand of Delano, Minnesota, for People/Humor; and Shawn Zierman of Duluth for Nature.
Second Place winners receive a Lake Superior Mini Calendar and a one-year subscription. Those winners are Marvil LaCroix of Silver Bay, Minnesota, for Lake/Landscapes, Kennard Wilson of Chicago for Nature, and La Mont Kraft of Seymour, Wisconsin, for People/Humor.
All who earn honors will receive an award certificate.
