Biz Robbins Book Talk
to
Carlton County Historical Society 406 Cloquet Avenue, Cloquet, Minnesota 55720
The Carlton County Historical Society presents two programs at its museum in Cloquet this weekend in celebration of Independence Day.
On Friday, July 3 at 1 p.m., Biz Robbins will narrate a power point slide show about her newest book, Life Jacket: A Memoir of a Float Camp Teacher. Robbins is the former Elizabeth "Liz" Harmala, valedictorian of Cloquet High School class of 1959. She now lives in Alaska and published a book about living and working on an Alaskan floating lumber camp. After graduating from high school, she attended the U of M in Minneapolis and moved to Colorado to teach 5th grade. There she met her husband and they moved to Alaska to teach in logging camps. Find out more about her story of being a Float Camp teacher, and after her husband's death, "floating alone and finding a life jacket in community."
On Saturday, July 4, at 4 p.m. the Carlton County Historical Society hosts our 4th annual Accordion Concert by students and faculty of the Harrington Arts Center from Superior, WI. Helmi Harrington, director of the arts center and accordion museum, has a patriotic program lined up for us, plus many old time favorites. If you are an accordion player, bring your musical instrument along for show, tell and play!
After both programs, refreshments will be served. Regular admission is $2 for adults, $1 for children under 12, and free admission for children under 5 and Carlton County Historical Society members. The Carlton County Historical Society is a Blue Star Museum, offering free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families through Labor Day. The museum is handicapped accessible.
