Crafting a Style of Native American Flute

Create a wooden cedar flute from a kit developed by the instructor. Students will use the arm, hand, finger as the ruler. Students will burn holes on one half of the flute and use a Xacto 11 and 17 blades to clean up all burrs and chambers and develop mouth piece. The crafter will sand and seal the air chambers with a sealant to prevent a moisture build-up. After sanding the two halves it will be glued together and wrapped with rubber tubes to prevent cracking of the wood. When the glue is dry students will sand the cylinder, create a focus channel, and “bird” for the air to flow from one cylinder to the next. This “bird” will create an air tight seal for air to flow into the cylinder which creates the musical sound showing life in a newly created instrument.

Students will get instructions on playing and creating their own personal song. Students must be age 18 or older. No musical ability is required. Students must be able to use small xacto blades and sand paper.
