Veterans’ Memorial Hall will bring “History in a Pint,” its local history discussion series, to Carmody Irish Pub & Brewing Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. This “History in a Pint” comes during the week of the 25th anniversary of the Desert Storm ground war. Gulf War veteran John Marshall will discuss his experiences in that conflict. According to his biography at www.vets-hall.org, John W. Marshall of Duluth, Minnesota enlisted in the Army Dec. 26, 1988. When the Persian Gulf War began, his unit, the First Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, Second Armored Division, was sent to the Middle East, where it was involved in the ground offensive against Iraq. On Feb. 27, 1991, only 18 hours before the cease-fire, two Bradley Fighting Vehicles became separated from others in the unit. Shortly after capturing Iraqi soldiers, the U.S. troops, including Marshall, came under "friendly fire" because of a mistaken identity. Marshall and two other members of his unit were wounded and one was killed. Marshall, who won the Purple Heart, received a medical discharge later in 1991. John has a compelling story of war and its aftereffects. Veterans’ Memorial Hall was established in 1910 and is a program of the St. Louis County Historical Society. www.vets-hall.org, features more than 6,000 veteran stories. “History in a Pint” is a free event.
