Discovering the Ancient Caribou Hunters of Marquette County’s Silver Lake
to
Marquette Regional History Center 145 W. Spring Street, Marquette, Michigan 49855
12,000 years ago on the shoreline of Silver Lake a herd of migrating caribou stopped for a drink, and ancient hunters using wooden spears with stone tips suddenly appeared. This presentation will focus on the results of the Silver Lake Reservoir archaeological survey project that Jim Paquette undertook starting back in 1987-88, and again, continuing during 2002 through 2008 when low water levels in the basin allowed for additional surface reconnaissance along the exposed shoreline of the original lake. This program documents some of the most exciting and important archaeological discoveries ever made by Paquette in his “spirit quest” search for the elusive proof that Ice Age Paleo-Indian families once lived right here in the central Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
On display at the program will be an extensive collection of rare ancient stone spear points and tools that were left behind by Ice Age and early Holocene hunter/gatherers who once camped and lived on the shores of Marquette County’s Silver Lake. This program will be presented by Jim Paquette. $5 suggested donation. Call 906-226-3571 or visit marquettehistory.org for more info. Program at 7 p.m. (note change from originally scheduled 6:30).
