North House Folk School 500 Highway 61 West, Grand Marais, Minnesota 55604
One of the Cook County region’s signature birding events will be later this month when the North House Folk School in Grand Marais holds the Northern Landscapes Festival, which will include workshops for birders of all levels. Among the featured festival presenters will be ornithology expert Bob Janssen, who will talk about his new book “Birds of Minnesota State Parks.” The festival runs from May 29 to 31. (The Folk School can be reached at 888-387-9762.)
With spring bird migration and summer nesting, the Arrowhead region is home to such birds as the Tundra Swan, Sandhill Crane, Rusty Blackbird, Boreal Owls, Northern Saw-whet Owls, Evening Grosbeak and some 20 species of warblers. For a complete list of birds, check out our “A Birder’s Guide for Cook County, Northeastern Minnesota” that is free for the asking at the Grand Marais Visitor Center (call 888-922-5000).
