Jim Jarvise, of Morning Light Photography, captured this August 2011 sunrise in Duluth:
I was staying on the UMD campus while my daughter attended the Minnesota Ballet summer intensive. My month in Duluth, however, was about to end. I had already completed dawn photoshoots at Leif Erikson Park and Palisade Head, and I was now anxious to photograph the Duluth lighthouse as well. Duluth is one of my favorite places to visit, and Lake Superior offers numerous stunning photographic opportunities.
I arrived at Canal Park at 4 o'clock on the morning of August 6, 2011. I set up my tripod on the lighthouse pier about 15 minutes before the sun broke the Lake Superior horizon. The sky was brilliant with streams of color ranging from yellow to red across a sea of blue, and the lighthouse was silhouetted against the sky, its beacon still announcing its visual warning. I waited until the beacon flashed red and snapped the shot. What a privilege to be able to capture the beauty of that morning sunrise.
