The 2014 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, which organizers had decided to cancel, is back on after an outpouring of support from the community.
Just days after organizers canceled the 2014 race because of a funding shortfall, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is back on, with new leadership.
The Duluth News Tribune's Mike Creger:
“There’s a huge upswell of people willing to help and keep it going,” said musher John Stetson.
He said the talk of new leadership has drawn the interest of new and old sponsors of the race, which has only a few thousand dollars in its checkbook.
[Tone] Coughlin said a group of about 10 mushers and Beargrease race fans got together over the weekend and made plans to make the race happen.
Our own Linda Nervick, vice president of marketing partnerships and advertising sales, is part of that group. "It's an event that has been an icon for a generation of people," Linda said Tuesday. "Stay tuned for updates."
The nearly 400-mile race along Minnesota's North Shore will celebrate its 30th running on January 26, 2014.
