Centennial Conservatory Reopens
The Centennial Botanical Conservatory reopened Friday in Thunder Bay “after being closed for the last year,” reports TBNewsWatch.com. "The facility was shut down after safety issues were raised about possible falling glass. City council debated closing the facility for good, but outcry from the community has kept the conservatory open.”
Dozens of families turned out for the reopening of the much-loved conservatory, which was built in 1967 as a city centennial project.
Pictured Rocks' Personal Watercraft Use Assessment Continues to Develop
As it develops a new environmental assessment and reevaluates the use of personal watercraft at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the National Park Service this week released a report summarizing the comments received during last fall’s public scoping period.
A draft of the environmental assessment plan is due out in the spring, followed by another public commenting period. The finalized plan will be implemented this fall.
Visit Duluth CEO Honored
Terry Mattson, the president and CEO of Visit Duluth, was honored with the Outstanding Individual in Tourism award at the annual Explore Minnesota Tourism Conference this week in Minneapolis.
+ At a public forum in Marquette on Wednesday, “members of the Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) say ‘global climate change is a reality’ and it's affecting the Great Lakes,” reports WLUC’s Beth Cefalu. “The meeting brought up concerns about shorter winters, snowfall melting at a faster rate and its impact on our environment.”

+ Registration has opened for the 2013 Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon in Duluth. Interested runners have until Feb. 22 to enter the lottery, from which the race’s 6,300 participants will be drawn. The race takes place on June 22.
