Lake Superior Magazine has given an annual Achievement Award since 1994.
The Bad River Watershed Association won Lake Superior Magazine’s 2012 Achievement Award, and Editor Konnie LeMay formally presented the award to the association yesterday (Nov. 15) during its board meeting in Ashland, Wisconsin.
Association volunteers do regular monitoring of water quality, establishing a base of data helpful in reviewing future developments. The association has connected federal programs to local governments to replace inadequate culverts in the district and for other projects. It has also begun working with landowners to encourage water-health practices.
We gave our first award in 1994.
“When the beer’s done, we’ll open.”
The Lake’s newest brewery will open its doors (and taps) later this month, reports the Duluth News Tribune. Canal Park Brewing Company in Duluth boasts a state-of-the-art facility, 10 tanks, a malted barley silo and glass windows for public viewing of the brewing. The pub will seat 200. Among the brewery’s initial offerings are an India pale ale, a Belgian Tripel and an oatmeal stout.
+ You can visit Canal Park Brewing Company in January as part of the North Shore Brewery Tour 2013, departing from Thunder Bay, Ontario. More details here, or call 807-631-7837.
Green Herring
Lake Superior herring were nearly wiped out by overfishing, but after a 30-year recovery, restrictions were loosened in 2006. Today, there’s a booming market for the fish, fueled by Scandinavian demand for the roe (egg-filled sack), a Swedish delicacy that sells for $8 a pound, according to a Minnesota Public Radio report.
+ What happened to the smelt, once so abundant that you could scoop them by the net-full from streams? The Mining Gazette has the answer.
Big Top Tickets: Big Top Chautauqua has announced the first shows of its 2013 lineup. Duluth’s own Trampled by Turtles will take the stage on June 15, country crooner Don Williams will perform on July 12, and the ABBA Tribute Show arrives July 19. Tickets are on sale now. Big Top is located just south of Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Brothers in Arms: The Mining Journal tells the story of brothers Dick and Lee Contois, World War II veterans from Marquette, Michigan.
+ The town’s historic Father Marquette statue will be restored next year. Venus Bronze Works will use the winter months to craft replacement parts for the 115-year-old statue of the city’s namesake.
Golden Opportunity: A rare golden eagle was captured and banded in Duluth this week, reports the Duluth News Tribune. Only a few hundred goldens are spotted in the area each year, and only 10 have been banded since 1972. The bird was also fitted with a GPS transmitter that will help researchers study habitat use.
Support MTU Research: Michigan Tech launched Superior Ideas last month, a crowdfunding website to support MTU research projects, like this Lake Superior sturgeon study.
