We've got an abbreviated edition for you this week because...
A snowstorm dropped more than a foot of snow on some areas of the region on Thursday night and Friday morning (including 14.3 inches on our offices in Duluth).
The storm caused widespread closures, including the Mackinac Bridge and access to the Apostle Islands’ ice caves.
Northern Ontario, from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie, were expected to get as much as a foot of snow Friday.
Restoring the St. Louis River
Two initiatives announced this week will benefit Minnesota’s St. Louis River.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chose the estuary as one of its habitat focus areas. NOAA will work with local organizations to rehabilitate and restore fish and wildlife habitat in the river, once heavily polluted and still the focus of many cleanup efforts.
On Thursday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $250,000 grant to the city of Duluth “to fund green infrastructure projects to improve water quality in the Lake Superior Basin.”
Duluth is the first of 16 cities to receive funding in the initial round of EPA’s new Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Shoreline Cities grant program.
The grant projects, including green roofs and rain gardens, aim to keep untreated stormwater out of the river – and Lake Superior.
