Late-April Ice in Duluth
Ice lingered on the Lake Superior shore in Duluth this week.
A sign of spring…

The U.S. Coast Guard was ready to break ice, but it turned out they weren’t needed after all, and the Madeline Island Ferry started another season Tuesday without much trouble.

… and another taste of winter
On Thursday and into Friday, more than a foot of snow fell on some parts of western Lake Superior. The 4.8 inches at the Duluth airport pushed the city’s seasonal total to 130.1, the third-most ever recorded. MLive.com’s Mark Torregrossa has a roundup of Upper Peninsula seasonal totals.

Michigan wolf population largely unchanged

Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials said Wednesday the latest wolf survey results indicate no significant change in the Upper Peninsula population of the animals over the past year.
