Icebergs continued to linger on Lake Superior this week. Locals say it's been decades since they've seen ice so late in the year.
LSM wins Minnesota SPJ awards – woo-hoo!
Konnie LeMay, LSM’s editor, took second place in the magazine feature category at the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists’ Page One Awards for “State of the Lake: Fires and Floods.” The extensive feature, which appeared in the February/March 2013 issue, chronicled the series of devastating natural disasters that struck our region in 2012.
Managing Editor Bob Berg also won an award: second place in Best Department for the magazine’s Travel & Events section.
Our June/July 2013 “Tall Ships” issue won second in Best Cover.
Congrats to the team!
You can see all the winners at the SPJ site [PDF].
Woo-Hoo, Part II
And while we’re celebrating a little, we must mention a few staff birthdays and anniversaries. Linda Nervick, advertising/marketing partnerships VP, and Konnie both had birthdays within the last week.
June 1 marked three staff anniversaries, too: Advertising Coordinator Hank Calvert, 10 years; Managing Editor Bob Berg, nine years; and Art & Production Manager Amy Larsen, three years.
Best wishes and congrats to all.
Flood-damaged highway in Jay Cooke State Park to be rebuilt
The Minnesota DOT made the announcement this week:
The Minnesota Department of Transportation will rebuild the closed, flood-damaged, two-mile-long section of Highway 210 in Jay Cook State Park. Work will begin in summer 2015 and will most likely be completed in 2016. […]
Highway 210 was heavily damaged on June 19/20 2012 when a flood caused landslides that endangered the safety of the embankments that support the roadway and the slopes above the roadway. Then stream flows, which exceeded the capacity of the culverts, caused the roadway to wash out.
