“Shipwrecks Alive!” exhibit opens in Duluth
After eight months of development, the Great Lakes Aquarium’s new exhibit opened today.
“Shipwrecks Alive!” is a new exhibit exploring three different wreck sites: the America at Isle Royale in Lake Superior; Truk Lagoon’s graveyard of World War II Japanese ships and planes in Micronesia in the South Pacific; and a general re-creation of an ancient Roman merchant vessel in the Mediterranean.
That’s from managing editor Bob Berg’s preview of the exhibit.
Lake Superior Magazine’s Cindy and Paul Hayden donated several artifacts to “Shipwrecks Alive!” including the staircase from the America. It was recovered by the late Jim Marshall (Cindy’s father), who had salvage rights to the wreck, and was previously on display in our offices.
StoryCorps’ MobileBooth sets up shop in Marquette
In 2003, the nonprofit StoryCorps began recording interviews with folks across the U.S. Eleven years later, the organization has more than 45,000 interviews in its archive.
This month, in partnership with local NPR affiliate WNMU, StoryCorps’ mobile recording booth is coming to Marquette.
StoryCorps’ MobileBooth interviews are conversations between two people who care about each other, guided by a StoryCorps facilitator. Selections from the project are broadcast weekly on NPR’s Morning Edition, and WNMU will air many of the interviews, too. Each participant receives a CD of his or her interview.
If you’d like to reserve an interview time, call 800-850-4406 or go to the StoryCorps website. The MobileBooth, a converted Airstream trailer, will be parked at the Peter White Public Library from July 5 to August 2.
