Fall Color 2014: Lutsen, Minnesota
Cargo totals still pacing ahead of 2013
This year’s long-lingering ice had many people fearful of stunted shipping totals.
Instead, through September, cargo shipments on the St. Lawrence Seaway are up 5 percent year-over-year.
“Heading into October here at the Head of the Lakes, we expect to see continued gains on the deficit experienced at the start of the season,” said Duluth Seaway Port Authority director Vanta Coda in a news release. “Iron ore shipments have rebounded significantly, the early autumn grain lineup looks favorable, and we’re expecting above average movements of general cargo at our Clure Public Marine Terminal.”

Terry Begnoche remembers every chilling second of his rapid rise from 220 feet deep in Lake Superior — how an ascent that should have taken at least 45 minutes took two minutes, how he couldn’t stop it, and how he hit the surface of the great lake knowing he was in deep trouble.
Lake level report
Lake Superior rose nearly an inch in September, a month during which the Big Lake usually declines by half an inch.
Lakes Michigan-Huron rose above average last month, and all five Great Lakes are now above their long-term average levels.
