Capitol Christmas Tree stops in Duluth
This year’s U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree was harvested in Chippewa National Forest, on lands of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. The forest, between Grand Rapids and Bemidji, Minnesota, has now twice provided the tree. It’s the 11th from our region since the tradition began in 1964.
LSM Editor Konnie LeMay wrote about the tree this week before a scheduled event in Duluth. The 88-foot-tall white spruce will make 30 stops on its way to Washington, D.C.

Road Watchers needed in the U.P.
We all do plenty of grumbling about road conditions after snowstorms. “How were the roads?” is the winter “Good morning” among the LSM crew.
In the Upper Peninsula, you can now share your gripes with folks who can offer more than sympathy.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is looking for volunteer Road Watchers to report on winter road conditions along key U.P. routes. The feedback from regular commuters will “help fine-tune winter maintenance operations,” MDOT says.
Are Atlantic salmon finally reproducing here?
A Lake Superior State University graduate has published findings in the Journal of Great Lakes Research that answer the question many anglers have been asking for years: Are Atlantic salmon reproducing in the Great Lakes?
New vision for Duluth’s Lincoln Park
Candace Renalls, Duluth News Tribune:
While the old Seaway Hotel in Duluth’s Lincoln Park neighborhood is being refurbished, several business owners are working on their vision for the block to its east.
Building on the popularity of Bent Paddle Brewing Co. and Frost River Trading Co., they envision a hub of locally owned, craft-centered businesses, including specialty restaurants, niche offerings and retailers that make their wares on site.
+ Amber Mullen, Ashland Daily Press: “Just before Ashland received its first dusting of snow, the National Parks Service (NPS) wrapped up summer initiatives for the $3.5 million cultural site restoration project on five of the Apostle Islands with a prescribed burn on Devils Island.”
