Smoke over the water
The sky over western Lake Superior turned an eerie yellow on Monday. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency explained the haze:
Minnesota’s air is looking a bit hazy the past couple days. Smoke from Canadian wildfires pushing south yesterday made for a spectacular sunset, but is also contributing to poor air quality. The smoke is affecting a wide region including five states, but is heaviest in northern Minnesota. As of 3 p.m., hazy conditions and elevated fine particle levels are persisting in many areas of Minnesota.
The Duluth office of the U.S. National Weather Service chimed in on the phenomenon, too.

UWS presents at Great Lakes Research conference
It might be summer vacation for some, but University of Wisconsin-Superior students and faculty were represented at the 58th annual conference on Great Lakes Research in Burlington, Vt., at the end of May.
The International Association for Great Lakes Research invited Lorena Rios Mendoza to showcase her plastics research. She and two UWS students were invited to participate in the conference in the special session of plastic pollution within the Great Lakes Ecosystem.
