Canada's Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area established
Thunder Bay's Chronicle-Journal:
After eight years since its announcement, the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area has now become a reality.
Known as Bill C-61, the Senate officially passed the bill unanimously on Tuesday. The conservation area comprises more than 10,000 square kilometres of lake and includes lakebeds, islands and north shorelands. It is the largest protected freshwater marine area in the world.
Greg Rickford, Canada's minister of natural resources, in a news release said, "The establishment of the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area clearly demonstrates our Government's commitment to environmental protection. Northern Ontarians, and indeed all Canadians, will benefit from the protection of Lake Superior."
Beer battle brews
Peter Passi, Duluth News Tribune:
A billboard that recently went up in West Duluth — depicting a pint of beer with the slogan “#MySaintPaul, Minnesota’s Craft Capital” — touched off a verbal brouhaha Tuesday.
The advertisement drew a sharp retort from Duluth Mayor Don Ness, who views its message as a direct affront to his earlier proclamation that Duluth is “the craft beer capital of Minnesota.”
+ A reporting team from the Detroit Free Press was aboard the Paul R. Tregurtha this week. (From our own archive: "Life Aboard a Great Lakes Carrier.")
+ Comedian Maria Bamford, who grew up in Duluth, will star in a new Netflix series.
+ Sara M. Chase, Daily Press: "Ashland honored as 2015 Playful City."
+ Author and historian Fred Stonehouse signed copies of his new book in Marquette. (That book, The Last Laker, was published by Lake Superior Magazine. Check it out!)
