The Cookery Maven: Our Morning at the Sea Caves
The spectacular Apostle Islands National Lakeshore mainland sea caves are accessible by an over-the-ice hike this winter.
Last week, Mary Dougherty visited the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore sea caves – accessible by foot this winter for the first time since 2009 – and posted a beautiful photo essay about the trip on her website, The Cookery Maven:
While I’ve been out to them twice in the past (in the company of 75 – 100 other travelers), this was the first time we’ve traveled the mile or so alone. The walk was a mixture of apprehension (how do I know if the ice is thick enough), wonder (the snow, wind and ice enveloped my eyes and ears) and excitement (Ted, Jack and I were alone, walking across a frozen lake towards one of the wonders in this world).

Mary first came to Bayfield, Wisconsin, more than a dozen years ago via the Isle of Skye, the family sailboat, and found "home." In 2007, she and Ted packed up their five children and four dogs and moved to the Bayfield Peninsula. Mary loves to write about her peninsula life with good food, great family and friends and, of course, the Big Lake. We're pleased to feature Mary's blog as part of our regular blogger favorites.
