Fall is my favorite time of year and October/November is always one of my favorite issues (am I allowed to say that?) This issue is another autumn great.
First, Joel Austin – a photographer new to our pages – makes his debut and introduces a place that might be unknown to most readers. Joel’s fall photographic tour of the Penokees in Wisconsin makes a beautiful, magical start to the season.
You might recall from the last issue that I often spent summer time outdoors reading (since Mom thought that more appropriate than hanging out inside during the sunny days). Well, most of those books were mysteries.
That’s why I was so tickled to read about murder and mayham with some top-notch, internationally known mystery writers who have chosen to set their series in our North Woods. They tell us why they think Lake Superior is a lovely place for murder from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to the bays of Ontario (and the two states in between).
No issue coming out now would be worth it’s trick-or-treat salt without a few Halloween flairs. We’ve got a true-life ghost story from Sir Benedict’s Tavern in Duluth plus a boatload of zombies and other spooky critters gearing up for scares at the William A. Irvin, the Lake Superior Zoo and elsewhere in the month of October.
For the fall harvest, our Recipe Box mistress Juli Kellner offers some Apple Butter recipes.
Finally, winter is never too far behind our fall and our Lake Superior Recreation Guide is packed with things to plan to do in the next season – ice fishing, tubing, snowmobiling and such. We learn about the rejuvenation of Iverson Snowshoes & Furniture and about how to shoot panoramic shots of the Big Lake. As I said, the guide is packed – snow packed!
The issue will be haunting the newsstands soon – or pick up the phone and Barb, who isn’t at all scary, will help you today.
