February 1983 set record high temperatures around the Big Lake. On Feb. 13, Hancock, Michigan, set the day’s record with a high of 41º F; Ely, Minnesota, 37º; and International Falls, Minnesota, 44º.
The next day, Feb. 14, Duluth warmed up for Valentine’s Day, setting a record high of 41º.
In Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on Feb. 20, the temperature topped out at 47º F, the highest ever recorded in the Soo on that day.
On March 12, 1983, Ely set another record high, reaching 53º on a day when high temperatures usually hover just above freezing.
Around the Lake: Transitions
Cari Obst, outgoing executive director of the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Bureau, was honored at her retirement party in December with a plaque of appreciation from the State of Wisconsin's Department of Tourism, recognizing Cari's 10 years of service to the chamber, the community and Wisconsin’s tourism industry. David Eades, formerly the chamber’s technical manager, took over as executive director in January.
After five years, including four as artistic director, Noah Siegler resigned in December from StageNorth Theater in Washburn, Wisconsin. He’s leaving in February for Austin, Texas, where his wife took a job with Whole Foods. Under Noah’s direction, StageNorth flourished, becoming a treasured part of the community and drawing award-winning performers. A new artistic director has not yet been hired.
Duluth-raised actor Daniel Durant, who was born deaf, was featured this winter in several episodes of the ABC Family TV series “Switched at Birth.” Daniel, 23, plays Matthew, one of a handful of deaf characters on the show. He was an extra during the show’s first season before earning a larger role this year.
