1905 Storm: Ships Damaged on Lake Superior
The ships damaged on Lake Superior during the storm of Nov. 27-28, 1905:
1. Mataafa – Steamer, dropped its barge James Nasmyth, then hit north pier of Duluth Ship Canal and foundered; 9 crew members die; salvaged 1906, returned to service in 1907.
2. R.W. England – Steamer ran aground on Park Point south of ship canal after trying to make the pier entry; salvaged.
3. Isaac L. Ellwood – Freighter hit north and south piers of ship canal entering during height of storm, later sank in harbor shallows off Minnesota Point; salvaged in 1906.
4. Arizona – Wooden lumber hooker; minor damage, Duluth.
5. S.C. Reynolds - Steamer moored Duluth harbor; damaged.
6. Crescent City – Steamer driven ashore one mile east of Lakewood, Duluth; salvaged in 1906.
7-8. Lafayette – Steamer pulling barge Manila ran on rocks near shore about 6 miles northeast of Two Harbors, broke in two; stern salvaged and quadruple-expansion steam engine re-used in J.S. Ashley in 1909. Manila salvaged.
9-10. William Edenborn – Steamer ran ashore and broke up at Split Rock River after losing its steel barge, Madeira, which foundered at Gold Rock. Edenborn salvaged 1906; Madeira sank. Edenborn fireman on rope crushed between boat and cliff; Madeira first mate drowned.
11. George Herbert – Scow barge towed by tug F.W. Gillett blown ashore 77 miles northeast of Duluth; total loss; 3 crewmen die when they won’t jump ashore, but captain and lumber camp clerk jump to safety.
12-13. George Spencer - Wooden steamer towing Amboy grounded 3 miles northeast of Manitou River; total loss along with Amboy, which wrecked nearby.
14. Harold B. Nye – Steamer, open lake, heavily damaged and barely made port at Two Harbors.
15. William E. Corey – Steamer grounded on Gull Island Reef in the Apostle Islands; salvaged after effort of several vessels.
16. Ira H. Owen – Steamer foundered with virtually no trace northeast of Outer Island in the Apostles and 14 crew lost.
17. Bransford – Steel bulk freighter stranded on a reef southwest of Menagerie Island; substantial bottom repairs.
18. Monkshaven – British “tramp steamer” grounded near Pie Island, Thunder Bay; foundered then became a total loss during salvage voyage one year later.
19. Rosemount – Steamer stranded in Thunder Bay; salvaged.
20. Western Star – Steamer beached at Fourteen Mile Point east of Ontonagon, Michigan; salvaged.
21-22. Coralia – Steamer stranded and later salvaged near Point Abbaye east Keweenaw Point while towing barge Maia, also salvaged.
23. Constitution – Steel barge, broke loose from the steamer Victory on the eastern lake; recovered off the Apostle Islands without significant damage.
24. Angeline – Bulk freight steamer; damaged; open lake.
25. Mariposa – Steamer; damaged; open lake.
26. E.C. Pope – Steamer; damaged; open lake.
27. Umbria – Steamer; pilothouse swept away on open lake.
28. Perry G. Walker – Steamer; topside damage on open lake.
29. Yosemite – Steamer; damaged; open lake.
