The June/July 2013 issue won a bronze for Cover Design, and the Tall Ships cover story won a gold for Feature Article and silver for Feature Design.
Lake Superior Magazine joins prestigious company and becomes the first under-30,000-circulation publication to earn the Minnesota Magazine of the Year from the Minnesota Magazine & Publishing Association (MMPA).
The award was announced Thursday, Nov. 7, during the MMPA’s annual Excellence Awards banquet, where Lake Superior Magazine also won nine other awards, including gold for Overall Excellence in its category (general interest, circulation under 60,000).
“Lake Superior Magazine features a lively and impressive mix of in-depth articles that highlight the people, places, history and culture of the region, along with breathtaking photography that makes you want to drop everything and go there,” came one critique from a judge for the Overall Excellence category. “Clean design and compelling writing combine to create a magazine that's hard to put down.”
The Magazine of the Year award “is designed to recognize consistent, comprehensive, and cumulative excellence in publishing,” according to the MMPA. Past recipients of the award, which was first presented in 2010, include Minnesota Monthly, EXHIBITOR and Twin Cities Business.
Lake Superior Magazine was one of five finalists this year for the honor.
“We are thrilled, honored and humbled all at the same time,” says Editor Konnie LeMay, who accepted the awards at the gala in Minneapolis along with Publishers Cindy and Paul Hayden and Managing Editor Bob Berg.
“We’re so proud to be able to represent our region with a quality publication and to get this kind of recognition for doing that. Credit goes to our full magazine crew, our contributors, our advertisers, our service providers and our community. Nothing like this is accomplished without great support – and we have that here around Lake Superior from people in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario.”
Among the other awards, Lake Superior Magazine swept its category’s Feature Article awards, taking all three. The gold went to the June/July 2013 cover story “Hail! Tall Ships Ahead.” “Dogging the Beargrease,” from December/January 2013, won silver. August/September 2012’s “7 Great Fall Drives” took the bronze.
