Some readers may recall my article about the Hinckley Fire, “Surviving the Flames,” which appeared in Lake Superior Magazine’s August/September 2014 issue. At the time I wrote the article I was unaware of a remarkable book about the fire, Under a Flaming Sky, written by Daniel James Brown and published in 2006. Mr. Brown’s thorough research and writing competence make this, in my view, by far the best of several books about the fire. He has done exhaustive detective work to uncover anecdotal material, documents all his sourcing, and tells all in a gripping narrative. I recommend this book, now available in paperback, to anyone with a family tie or an interest in this unusual firestorm that took over 400 lives in just a few hours in 1894.
