We, like many local folk, were fans of the Duluth Grill before “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” wild man, Guy Fieri, “discovered” it. The Grill serves a “flexitarian” menu that caters to food philosophies as well as palates. This cookbook is a tasty compilation of those recipes from the simple (a peanut butter recipe even I can do) to the sublime (Tofu and Walnut Marinara, anyone?). Between recipes come short slices of Tom Hanson’s food and service credos, plus glimpses of staff, food producers and even some of the food (gardens in the parking lot). It’s what a cookbook, and restaurant, should be.

The pages of Ros’ book look like she pulled them from her typewriter – the old-fashioned kind. That’s perfect for this collection of wacky items and ads found in 200 years of Bayfield Peninsula newspapers. These folksy bits make hometown papers worth reading and small-town residents worth knowing. Ros suggests a book for you, one for a friend and one for the outhouse. If you get that, this book might be right for you because it’s a hoot – the old-fashioned kind.
Beautiful Razor
love poems and other lies by Al Hunter
Kegedonce Press, ISBN: 978-0-9868740-1-7, $15 (Cdn.) Softcover
These are poems about the heart – the broken heart, mostly. This is the third book of poetry for Al, a former chief at Rainy River First Nations. Al has a witty and thoroughly engaging style accessible to those who might shy from poetry. He frequently uses the imagery of our North Woods to express the emotions, joy to sorrow, that we all feel. This book helps heal your hurts and connect with others. Worthy work for any poem.
